Wired glass, also known as shatter-resistant glass, is manufactured by heating ordinary flat glass to a red-hot, softened state and then pressing preheated steel wires or wire mesh into the middle of the glass. It boasts excellent fire resistance, effectively blocking flames and remaining intact even when exposed to high temperatures; when broken, it does not produce sharp shards that could cause injury. Additionally, it offers anti-theft protection—should the glass be cut, the embedded wire mesh will continue to provide a barrier. This type of glass is primarily used for roof skylights and balcony windows.
Wired glass, also known as safety glass or steel-wire glass, is a special type of glass formed during the rolling manufacturing process by pressing a wire mesh into a semi-liquid glass ribbon. Its key advantage is that it has significantly higher strength than ordinary glass. When subjected to impact or rapid temperature changes, wired glass breaks without shattering into sharp fragments; instead, it cracks but remains intact, preventing small, jagged pieces from flying off and causing injury. In the event of a fire, even if wired glass heats up and cracks, it can still maintain its structural integrity, effectively containing the spread of flames—hence its alternative name, fire-resistant glass. On the downside, during production, the wire mesh is prone to oxidation under high-temperature radiation, which may result in yellowish “rust-like” spots and bubbles on the glass surface. Wired glass is commonly used for skylights, ceiling panels, and doors and windows that are susceptible to vibration.
