Tempered glass is called “safety glass” because it is widely used in high-rise building windows and doors, glass curtain walls, interior partition glass, skylights, sightseeing elevator shafts, furniture, glass railings, and exterior-opening windows on high floors. This is because, after breaking, tempered glass does not shatter into sharp-edged fragments; instead, it breaks into uniform, small particles, thereby reducing the potential harm to human beings.

When ordinary glass breaks, it often produces sharp, blade-like fragments that can easily cut children and anyone who comes into contact with them, directly causing harm to the human body. The key distinction between tempered glass and ordinary glass lies precisely in whether the broken pieces remain sharp and pointed. After tempered glass breaks, its fragments shatter into uniform, small particles without the sharp, blade-like edges characteristic of ordinary glass. For this reason, tempered glass is referred to as "safety glass" and is widely used in automobiles, interior decoration, and even in outward-opening windows on high-rise buildings. In contrast, when ordinary glass breaks, its sharp, blade-like edges can easily injure children or anyone who bumps into it, posing a serious risk to personal safety. Whether broken glass turns into small particles or retains blade-like edges is the most significant difference between tempered glass and ordinary glass. However, in engineering inspections, routinely resorting to such destructive testing methods is simply impractical.
So how can customers tell whether the glass they’ve purchased is tempered glass?
Tempered glass is produced by first cutting ordinary annealed glass into the desired dimensions, then heating it to a temperature close to its softening point, and finally cooling it rapidly and uniformly. After tempering, a uniform compressive stress is developed on the glass’s surface, while tensile stress is induced within the glass’s interior. This treatment significantly enhances the glass’s performance: not only does its tensile strength increase—growing to three times that of ordinary glass—but its impact resistance also improves dramatically, increasing to more than five times that of ordinary glass.
It is precisely because of this characteristic that stress patterns have become an important criterion for distinguishing genuine tempered glass from counterfeit. When viewed through a polarizing filter, tempered glass reveals colorful striations throughout its structure. If observed from the surface of the glass, you’ll notice alternating black and white spots—features that are invisible to the naked eye but can be captured clearly with a camera lens. When examining the glass, be sure to carefully adjust the light source; doing so will make the observation much easier.
